Sri Sathya Sai Samoohika Upanayanam | June 5, 2025

Upanayana is a spiritual investiture ceremony in Sanathana Dharma, in which young wards, or Vatus as they are referred to, are initiated into the chanting of the sacred Gayatri Mantra.

Right from the early 1960s, Swami has conducted and presided over Samoohika Upanayanas or Mass Upanayana Ceremonies, conferring on the Vatus the unique blessing of receiving the Gayatri Mantra from Bhagawan Himself. On such occasions, Swami would instruct the participants on the significance of the Gayatri Mantra, the sacred thread worn and the importance of the Brahmachari (celibate) stage in one’s spiritual journey. Apart from mass Upanayana ceremonies, Bhagawan has performed this ceremony for many individual children too in the interview room or devotees’ homes, thus reiterating the importance He gave to this sacred tradition.

As part of the Centenary Year Celebrations of our beloved Bhagawan, a Samoohika Upanayana was held this morning at the Sai Kulwant Hall where over 600 children were initiated into the divine fold.

Even as the significance of each step in the ritual was explained by the head priest, the Vatus received the blessing of the initiation, seated with their respective parents in the sacred precinct of the Maha Sannidhi of Bhagawan
